ARTIST INFO:
Mike Sohikian
Mike Sohikian
took a welding job after he returned from Vietnam. He spent 30
years as a member of the Bridge and Structural Ironworkers
Local 55. He starting drawing in the early 90s and entered
his first area show in 1995. Mike has been creating art ever
since. One sculpture is titled Horses Running and
was the start of a series of dynamic horse sculptures that has
now grown to a collection of about 50 pieces. His works have
been featured in the art book The Contemporary Blacksmith.
Mike is influenced by nature and earth. He thinks basically Mother
Nature has produced everything we are in some way. According
to Mike, She is the ultimate artist. His sculptures
are created from ASTM A 36 steel. This is the same material used
in the construction of bridges and buildings. |
I enjoy
working with steel. It is a contemporary material that represents
strength
and longevity. With the right amount of heavy-weight motor oil
applied to seal its
surface, an outdoor steal can last a lifetime, according
to Mike.
Steel sculptures indicate strength and power. It gives
me a pretty powerful feeling
to be creating them, said Mike. |
