Having a sculpture on display
is a great experience. I've learned a lot about sculpture making.
I just never thought about it enough to realize how much planning
and work goes into a piece. First we had to get the beams mitered.
Then when we got the steel, it took two to four people to move
the pieces around the shop. I also thought that I was going to
have help cutting the pieces, but in the end I wound up doing
them all myself. I remember when we started cutting my shop teacher,
Mr. Rehkopf, didn't think that we were going to have it finished
before the end of the year. Everything worked out in the end
though. As of this writing, were getting ready to assemble and
paint the sculpture for installation.
2006 ADDENDUM:
Zack Wallerius was a junior at the Saugatuck High School when
he created this
sculpture. In the summer of 2003, he attended the Michigan Summer
Institute Scholar
at the College for Creative Studies, taking a class in Integrating
New & Traditional
Technologies for Creative Image Making
Wallerius is the first student to have a sculpture included in
Art Round Town. His work
was chosen from more than 90 designs created by art and industrial
art students. He
graduated from Saugatuck High School in 2004 and will be attending
Maine College of
Art on a art scholarship.
