Russell Thayer
Artist's Statement:
The basic form of two upright
posts supporting a horizontal lintel has become a
major design feature in my sculpture. The shape is the universal
architectural
element, found in prehistoric Stonehenge and surrounding tombs,
ancient
temples and cathedral entrances, in the isolated Torii gates
in Japan.
The theme of the gate or passageway is also very expressive,
rich with religious
associations, and suggestive of the strength of castle entrances
or door of
ancient cities like Troy. Gates can also symbolize transitions
from material to
spiritual and from life to death. The form is endlessly variable
and allows the
artist great flexibility and creativity. |
