ARTIST INFO: For thirty years I have been constructing welded steel sculpture of animals. My intent was to create sculpture, which seemed as life like and na turalistic as possible. About ten years ago I decided to push my work in another level. No longer satisfied with a strictly naturalistic interpretation, I needed to express more. In 1996 my wife and I moved to New York City from our rural northern Michigan home of twenty odd years. I found a large studio in the D.U.M.B.O. section of Brooklyn amidst hundreds of other artists. The experience of living in New York encouraged me to explore and experiment I began mixing natural, human, and imaginary forms in my sculpture. Bugmen is an early example of this transformation. I have constructed Bugmen from welded steel. I begin each of my metal sculptures by forming an intricate welded wire structure reminiscent of a threedimensional line drawing. I attach sheet steel of various shapes and textures to the surface and a skin develops over the wire form. The completed form goes to the galvanizer where it is hot-dipped into zinc and then coated with liquid copper for outdoor durability More of Mr. Allens sculptures can be seen at the Constance Petter Gallery |
