Thomas Zaroff In the Beginning refers to the beginning of earth, the beginni ng of life on earth, and the beginning of an individual life. The upper form refers to the collision of the two celestial bodies that formed the earth and moon and also to the splitting of a seedpod or the division of a cell. The lower form is inspired by the deep-sea lava tubes or smokers around which, many believe, life on earth originated. A working title for this piece was Where We are From because to me it is fascinating that colliding heavenly bodies, super heated nutrient rich water from the bottom of the sea and the mechanism for cell division resulted in us and all that is around us. The morphology of these events and processes inspire the forms I use in my sculpture. |
