Zack Wallerius When we first started making plans for a sculpture in front of the school, I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to make. We had to come up with a design for a sculpture that would be built using round or square steel beams. I wanted to build three structures out of 12 by 12-square tubes that would bend at the top and lean to the side. Each structure would be pierced with geometric shapes. The first models we made were 1" to 1' scale, and made out of paper. I built my three pieces then decided on an arrangement that I liked. From the first models, seven were chosen to be built one-third scale. Mine was one of those. From the one-third scale maquettes mine was chosen to be built full scale. I was thrilled! |

HS Awards 1997 Art à Loan Having a sculpture on display
is a great experience. I've learned a lot about sculpture making.
I just never thought about it enough to realize how much planning
and work goes into a piece. First we had to get the beams mitered.
Then when we got the steel, it took two to four people to move
the pieces around the shop. I also thought that I was going to
have help cutting the pieces, but in the end I wound up doing
them all myself. I remember when we started cutting my shop teacher,
Mr. Rehkopf, didn't think that we were going to have it finished
before the end of the year. Everything worked out in the end
though. As of this writing, were getting ready to assemble and
paint the sculpture for installation. |
