2006 ADDENDUM: In my career as a large-scale artist, my idea of large, vertical slabs represent the dreams of my fancy world in which skyscrapers are transformed into abstract pieces of work. As my idea continues to grow in similar designs of work, I explore the different materials available to me for large outdoor sculpture. What I am seeking is a better understanding of materials, techniques, longevity, and application of the correct materials for each individual piece of sculpture. As you, the viewer will see in this work, the piece is carved from a block of Styrofoam, and then covered with a thin layer of fiberglass quick wall. In creating this work, I have already learned several advantages and disadvantages to the use of the quick wall and foam. Thus giving the piece a larger scale with a lighter weight and cost ratio to the work. I have also found that the structure of this material is not for load bearing. Therefore I continue to reach for my goal; to create enough of these works, that one day a viewer may walk amongst the work as if he/she is walking through a large city on the sidewalk. I am sure that one day I will gain the knowledge to fulfill my dream. |
