Artist Statement:
I find forms as they exist in space to be wholly fascinating.
Seeing a volume next to an edge, constructed on a plane that
rolls gently into a new form, all working together in visual
harmony, is an incredibly engaging experience for me.
Gathering these forms together in a successful composition is
the challenge that continually keeps me excited about making
sculpture.
The plastic nature of clay greatly influences my work. Clay,
by its very character, encourages me to pull, push, twist, bend,
layer, and tear it. It is this expressive plastic quality of
the material that thrills and captivates me. |
The figure as
a subject is something that I have continually responded to.
I have always loved observing the great figurative works of the
past, mindful of the evolution of clay and form as it is learned
and relearned and passed from one clay modeler to another. I
will often glean my ideas from art history, mythological, or
biblical themes; responding to the timelessness of such subjects
and using them as a guide to explore new form possibilities.
It is not uncommon for me to work in series to extract as much
visual information as a subject will yield.
Throughout my work, my goal is to achieve visual strength and
elegance while striving for an intuitive modeling result. Balance
and unity are words that I would use to best describe my images.
When the material, forms, design, and subject combine together
in such a way as to create a unified whole, I know that I have
created a successful piece. |
