Marcia Perry

My approach to sculpting is the one-way, labor-intensive reductive mode of taking away what doesn’t belong to expose an essential truth and beauty. I let the spirit of whatever I am working with speak through me rather than forcefully impose my ideas upon it.

Rounded, sensuous forms that invite touching (and sitting in the case of my hallmark chairs) occur frequently as I am drawn to the patterns of the curvaceous natural world.
I prefer to allow natural perfection to be appreciated more than my own work as “translator” so I most often sand the stone or wood to erase my tool marks and emphasize the grain or veining or other unique character of the material. The resulting sculptures are always one-of-a-kind and reflect my reverence for and delight in the beauty to be found everywhere we choose to seek it out.

My primary passion is for working with trees, but I also enjoy the adventure of playing with marble, soapstone and especially limestone, as in the abstract “Lyric” on display in Art ‘Round Town. The process of chipping away at logs and stones requires power equipment, hand tools, huge amounts of time and messy effort plus an abiding passion for this quest. To better appreciate this process, visitors of all ages are welcome any time of year at my Saugatuck studio where touching is not only permitted, but encouraged-- and you can observe the entire wood and stone sculpting process from beginning to end.
