Lisa Burrows Lisa explains, 1 choose steel as my primary medium because steel is a solid material with lasting strength. I do not plan my sculptures. Instead, I work as if Im piecing a puzzle together. I start by cutting and bending pieces of steel that are scattered on my worktable. I then weld one piece of steel to another and gradually build up the sculpture. As the sculpture develops, a form evolves - and this form may be figurative, animal, musical or completely abstract. Before I focus on what the form is, however, I focus on the movement of the form. |

Part of the movement
of the sculpture is the relationship between the shapes and lines
that will lead the viewers eye around the sculpture. My
desire is to create sculptures that not only convey an idea or
emotion, but also draw the viewer around the sculpture to enjoy
the various connections and movement of the form. Lisa creates her sculptures in her studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She studied art at Grand Rapids Community College and Aquinas College where she graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with sculpture as her primary focus. Lisa using either an arc welder or gas welding with oxygen and acetylene creates the sculptures. Her earlier sculptures were hand painted with a neutral dark brown paint patina or silver polish. Most of her current work has a powder coat or electro-coated paint finish. Lisa is also using more colors in her new works. Numerous galleries in Michigan have exhibited Lisas work. She has displayed her work In several juried and invitational shows. Her sculptures are currently on display at the Luoma Art Gallery and are found in private collections located throughout the United States and Germany. |
